I love my lawn. It’s no secret, I post about my lawn on Instagram all the time during the warm months of the year, I’m not hiding anything. I take a lot of pride in the lawn, gardens and exterior appearance of our house and I think that more homeowners should as well. A show stopper lawn and gardens are a great selling feature (chalk one up for curb appeal) but even if you have no intention of selling anytime soon, a gorgeous lawn is nicer to look at and will be the envy of your neighbours.
I didn’t always feel this way about landscaping and lawn care. I remember one of the first springs that I spent as a first time homeowner and all the time and effort I spent on rejuvenating our defunct Wortley Village lawn. My dad was over one day and thought it was funny how much I cared about the lawn now that it was my own. I couldn’t have given a shit about any of this stuff while I was still living with my parents, much to his chagrin. Now, we share tools and equipment so that we can both achieve the home exteriors of our dreams. Good times.
And now that I’m about to become a father, I feel that I have more reason than ever to care and tend to my lawn. My transition into a stereotypical suburban dad is almost complete. I have vowed to make our lawn and gardens more resplendent this year than ever before and thanks to the bizarre February weather we have had, my mind has turned to this task much earlier than in years past. I’m sure that you, the readers, have also been focusing on nothing but lawn care since the sun first graced our February sky and that is why you are here. Welcome.
I’ve been trying this thing where I ask ChatGPT to write me a blog and then re write it in the “style of CamVandersluis.com’s blog”, here it is:
Title: "Elevate Your Ontario Oasis: Cam Vandersluis's Guide to Early Spring Lawn Love"
Intro: Greetings, green thumbs of Ontario! As the frosty clutches of winter loosen, our attention turns eagerly to the awakening canvas of our lawns. At CamVandersluis.com, we're all about nurturing your personal oasis, and early spring is the prime time to embark on your lawn care journey. Dive into our exclusive guide tailored for Ontario homeowners, and let's cultivate a lush, envy-worthy lawn together!
1. Clear the Canvas: Brush Away the Winter Blues Shed the winter coat by raking away debris and coaxing your lawn out of hibernation. Say adieu to thatch – the pesky layer of last season's remnants – and let your grass breathe.
2. Aeration Elation: Let Your Lawn Breathe Unlock the secrets of healthy roots by aerating your soil. Our recommendation? Aerate every one to three years for an oxygen-infused, nutrient-rich soil that your grass will thank you for.
3. Overseed Extravaganza: Your Grass Deserves a Full House Treat your lawn to a superstar makeover with a generous overseeding session. Opt for a top-tier grass seed blend suited for Ontario's vibe, ensuring your lawn is the talk of the neighborhood.
4. Fertilize the Future: A Banquet Fit for Grass Royalty Roll out the green carpet by feeding your lawn the nutrients it craves. Choose a fertilizer with a well-balanced N-P-K ratio for a VIP treatment that fosters robust leaf and root growth.
5. Pest Patrol: Protect Your Turf from Uninvited Guests Show those pesky weeds and insects the exit before they crash your lawn party. Apply pre-emergent herbicides to thwart weed growth and keep an eagle eye out for any gate-crashing pests.
6. H2Oh Yeah: Hydration Happiness for Your Lawn Quench your lawn's thirst with strategic watering. Dive deep, water infrequently, and make mornings the cool hangout spot. This ensures your grass gets the hydration it needs without the risk of late-night diseases.
7. Mow Like a Pro: A Cut Above the Rest Set the stage for greatness by adjusting your mower to a higher setting. This early in the season, a gentle trim is all your lawn craves. Keep those blades sharp for a clean, stylish cut that leaves an impression.
Outro: There you have it, Ontario oasis cultivators! Cam Vandersluis here, bringing you the ultimate guide to early spring lawn love. Your patch of paradise deserves nothing but the best, so dive into these tips, and let's make your lawn the headline act this season. Until next time, happy lawn lounging!
Does that sound like me? I’m not convinced but some of the language is undoubtedly fun to read. I’m not sure if you go into a lawn centre this spring and ask for a grass seed that “matches Ontario’s vibe” you will find what you are looking for. Still, there are some good points in here and I will be doing all of these things in the coming months to help grow the greatest lawn in my neighborhood.
Specifically, I have a ton of damage from voles tunneling in my front yard to deal with, Japanese Beetles to destroy and I am still on a quest to level the back lawn so that I can get a proper mow without the lawnmower bouncing around all over the place.
As previously mentioned, I post about this stuff on my Instagram all the time and would love for you to follow along. Happy gardening everyone, feel free to send me photos of your amazing lawn and landscaping adventures this coming year.
